The Tango began in Buenos Aires in the late 1800s, then traveled to Paris and London in the early 1900s, where it was refined into the ballroom Tango danced today. Unlike the Waltz or Foxtrot, the ballroom Tango has no rise and fall. Dancers stay grounded, with cat-like walks, sudden pauses and crisp, staccato movements.

The basic ballroom Tango is very approachable. Because there's no rise and fall, many beginners find it easier than the Waltz. The challenge, and the fun, is in learning the sharp, controlled character and the connection with your partner.
Ballroom Tango is structured, travels around the floor and uses crisp, staccato movements. Argentine Tango is improvised, danced in a close embrace and focuses on intricate leg work and connection. VM Ballroom Dance Studios teaches both. See our Argentine Tango page to compare.
