What is the Foxtrot?

The Foxtrot is named after vaudeville performer Harry Fox, whose trotting steps became a dance craze in New York around 1914. It quickly spread to England, where it was refined into the smooth, flowing Slow Foxtrot. Today it's danced socially at weddings and galas and competitively in both American and International style.

Getting to know it

The Foxtrot, step by step

01

What does Foxtrot music sound like?

Foxtrot music is in 4/4 time, typically 112–136 beats per minute: think swing standards, jazz and smooth pop. The basic rhythm combines "slow" steps (two beats) and "quick" steps (one beat), most often slow, slow, quick, quick.

02

Is the Foxtrot hard to learn?

The social Foxtrot is very beginner-friendly: if you can walk to music, you can foxtrot. The competitive Slow Foxtrot is considered one of the more challenging ballroom dances because of its continuous, gliding movement, so it's a dance that grows with you.

American vs. International Foxtrot

  • American Smooth Foxtrot includes open positions, underarm turns and side-by-side figures, and is the go-to style for social dancing.
  • International Standard (Slow) Foxtrot stays in closed hold with long, smooth, continuous movement across the floor.

The basic is two slow walking steps followed by two quick side steps, counted slow, slow, quick, quick.

What is the difference between the Foxtrot and the Waltz?

The Waltz is danced to music in 3/4 time with rise and fall on every measure. The Foxtrot is danced to 4/4 music with a smoother, walking feel.

Yes. Many popular love songs, from Sinatra to Bublé to Ed Sheeran, are a perfect foxtrot tempo.

How long does it take to learn the Foxtrot?

Most beginners dance a basic social Foxtrot within 3–5 lessons. Mastering the smooth, continuous movement of the Slow Foxtrot takes longer.
