What is Argentine Tango?

Argentine Tango was born in the late 1800s in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, blending African, European and Latin American influences. It reached its golden age in the 1930s–50s with orchestras like those of Juan D'Arienzo, Carlos Di Sarli and Osvaldo Pugliese. In 2009, UNESCO recognized tango as part of humanity's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Getting to know it

The Argentine Tango, step by step

01

What does Argentine Tango music sound like?

Argentine Tango is danced to three types of music: tango (4/4, dramatic and walking), vals (a fast, flowing tango waltz in 3/4) and milonga (a quick, playful 2/4 rhythm). Tempos vary widely, and dancers interpret pauses, accents and melody rather than following a fixed count.

02

Is Argentine Tango hard to learn?

Argentine Tango is easy to start, since the foundation is simply walking with a partner, but it's a lifelong dance to master. Because it's improvised, leaders learn to create movement and followers learn to respond, which takes time and practice. Most students enjoy their first milonga after a few months of classes.

Argentine Tango vs. Ballroom Tango

  • Argentine Tango is improvised, danced in a close or flexible embrace, and features intricate leg work like ochos and ganchos. It's mainly a social dance.
  • Ballroom Tango follows set figures, travels around the floor in a fixed frame, and uses sharp, staccato movement and head snaps.

Argentine Tango FAQ

What is a milonga?

Both a social tango dance event and a lively style of tango music and dance. Milongas follow traditional etiquette, including the cabeceo, an invitation to dance made with eye contact and a nod.

Do I need a partner to learn Argentine Tango?

No. Many students start solo, and classes rotate partners so you learn to dance with everyone.

What is the basic Argentine Tango step?

The walk. Argentine Tango has no fixed basic, but many classes teach an eight-count "basic" (salida) as a framework.

What shoes should I wear for Argentine Tango?

Shoes with a smooth leather or suede sole that let you pivot. Followers often wear heels, but flats are fine when starting.

How long does it take to learn Argentine Tango?

Most students feel comfortable at a social dance after 2–3 months of regular classes. Like any improvised dance, it keeps deepening for years.
