What is the Mambo?

Mambo music developed in Cuba in the late 1930s and 40s, when musicians such as Orestes and Israel "Cachao" López added a syncopated, jazz-influenced section to the danzón. Bandleader Pérez Prado popularized mambo internationally, and in the 1950s New York dancers and bands like Tito Puente's turned it into a dance craze.

Getting to know it

The Mambo, step by step

01

What does Mambo music sound like?

Mambo music is in 4/4 time and fast, about 188–204 beats per minute in ballroom. Dancers step quick, quick, slow, and the Mambo is traditionally danced "on 2," meaning the forward or back break step happens on the second beat of the music.

02

Is the Mambo hard to learn?

The basic step is easy, but the tempo and on-2 timing take practice. If you already dance salsa or cha cha, you'll recognize many of the moves. Beginners often learn the slower Cha Cha first, then speed up to Mambo.

Mambo FAQ

What is the difference between Mambo and Salsa?

They're very similar. Mambo is traditionally danced on 2 with an emphasis on smooth, controlled styling, while most salsa styles break on 1. Many dancers call New York–style salsa on 2 "mambo."

What is the basic mambo step?

A forward rock step and back, then a back rock step and forward, counted quick, quick, slow (2-3-4, 6-7-8).

What is the difference between Mambo and Cha Cha?

Cha Cha evolved from Mambo. It's slower and replaces Mambo's pause with a triple step.

Is Mambo good exercise?

Yes. Its fast tempo and constant hip action make it an excellent cardio workout.

Do I need a partner to learn Mambo?

No. Many mambo moves, including "shines," are danced solo, and our instructors partner with you in lessons.
