01

What does Merengue music sound like?

Merengue music is lively and upbeat, in 2/4 time, usually about 120–160 beats per minute. Instruments like the accordion, güira and tambora create its driving rhythm. Dancers take one step on every beat, with relaxed knees and natural hip action.

Is Merengue hard to learn?

No. Merengue is widely considered the easiest partner dance to learn. If you can march in place to music, you can dance Merengue. Turns, arm styling and partner patterns keep it interesting as you progress.

Merengue FAQ

What is the basic merengue step?

A simple step on every beat, shifting weight from foot to foot like marching in place, with the hips moving naturally as the knees bend.

What is the easiest Latin dance to learn?

Merengue. It has a simple one-step-per-beat rhythm, so beginners can dance it socially after one lesson.

What is the difference between Merengue and Salsa?

Merengue uses one step per beat and no pauses. Salsa uses a quick-quick-slow rhythm with a pause and more complex footwork.

Both come from the Dominican Republic. Merengue is fast and steps on every beat, while Bachata is slower and romantic, with a tap or hip accent on every fourth beat.

Can I learn Merengue without a partner?
