The Cha Cha (originally the "cha-cha-chá") was born in Cuba in the early 1950s, when violinist and composer Enrique Jorrín created a slower, more danceable variation of mambo music. Dancers added a quick triple step that echoed the shuffling sound of their feet, and the name stuck. It swept through the U.S. and Europe within a few years.
