The Jive grew out of American swing dances like the Jitterbug and Lindy Hop in the 1930s and 40s. American GIs brought it to Europe during World War II, where it was refined into the competitive Jive. It became one of the five International Latin dances in 1968, even though its roots are American swing.

The basic Jive step is easy to learn, but the tempo is fast, so it takes some practice to stay light and on time. It's a terrific dance for building stamina and footwork. If the tempo feels like a lot at first, East Coast Swing is a great slower stepping-stone.
