What is the Hustle?

The Hustle emerged in the early 1970s in New York and South Florida Latin and disco clubs, blending swing and salsa influences. It became a national craze after Van McCoy's hit "The Hustle" (1975) and the film Saturday Night Fever (1977). Today's partner Hustle is fast, smooth and known for continuous spins.

Getting to know it

The Hustle, step by step

01

What does Hustle music sound like?

Hustle is danced to 4/4 disco and dance music, typically about 110–125 beats per minute. The most common version is the three-count Hustle, counted "and-1, 2, 3," where three steps fit into two beats of music, giving it a smooth, rolling feel.

02

Is the Hustle hard to learn?

The basic Hustle step is easy to learn, though the three-count rhythm over 4/4 music feels unusual at first. Once it clicks, beginners can add turns quickly. Advanced Hustle features fast multiple spins and drops.

Hustle FAQ

What is the basic hustle step?

A back step (the "and-1") followed by two steps in place, counted "and-1, 2, 3." The pattern repeats continuously.

Is the Hustle the same as the line dance?

No. The "Hustle" line dance is a separate group dance. The partner Hustle is a lead-and-follow couple dance.

Can you dance Hustle to modern music?

Yes. Any upbeat dance-pop or house track with a steady disco beat works great.

Is Hustle good for weddings?

Absolutely. Many wedding playlists are full of disco and dance-pop, and Hustle lets you dance with a partner to all of it.

Do I need a partner to take hustle lessons?

No. Group classes rotate partners, and instructors partner with you in private lessons.
